THE MASTER PLAN OF EVANGELISM: SUPERVISION
“DON’T YOU GET IT YET?” MK. 8:17
(SUPERVISION IS AN OVERALL PRINCIPLE OF DISCIPLESHIP, NOT A SUBSEQUENT STEP)
--HE KEPT CHECKING ON THEM
JESUS OFTEN MET WITH HIS DISCIPLES AFTER THEY HAD BEEN OUT SERVING TO HEAR THEIR REPORTS & SHARE IN EACH OTHER’S JOY. HIS TEACHING ROTATED BETWEEN INSTRUCTION & ASSIGNMENT.
THE 12 HAD A PREARRANGED REUINION & REST AFTER THEIR BRIEF WORK-THIS WAS JUST A FIELD ASSIGNMENT AS THEY CONTINUED THEIR TRAINING (LK. 9:10)
HE DID THE SAME WITH THE 70 AFTER THEY RETURNED (LK. 10:17-22)-HE WAS GIVEN JOY IN THE ULTIMATE VICTORY ASSURED BY THEIR WORK (18), PRAISED THE FATHER THAT HIS LABORS WERE SHOWING FRUIT (21-22), & CAUTIONED THEM AGAINST PRIDE (20)
--EXAMPLES OF REVIEW & APPLICATION
THIS IS A STRATEGY OF JESUS’ THROUGHOUT HIS MINISTRY, NOT A “NEXT STEP” IN THE ACTUAL PROCESS. HE WOULD REVIEW EXPERIENCES WITH THE DISCIPLES & BRING OUT THE APPLICATION.
ATTEMPT TO HEAL DEMON-POSSESSED BOY: MK. 9:17-29
FEEDING OF 5,000: 6:30-34
CROSSING THE SEA OF GALILEE: 8:17-19, MATT. 16:12
REBUKING THOSE OF ANOTHER “GROUP”: LK. 9:49-50
ANGER OVER REJECTION: LK. 9:51-6
--THE OVERALL PRINCIPLE
JESUS CHECKED THE ACTIONS & REACTIONS OF HIS DISCIPLES AS THEY FACED DIFFICULT SITUATIONS. HE WOULD LET THEM EXPERIENCE OR OBSERVE SOMETHING & THEN USE IT TO TEACH & TRAIN THEM.
HE REJOICED IN THEIR SUCCESS & CORRECTED THEIR FAILURES, BUT THERE WAS ALWAYS MORE TO DO & LEARN (KEPT THEM MOVING TOWARD THE GOAL)
HIS PLAN: TEACH BY EXAMPLE, ASSIGNMENT, & CONSTANT CHECK-UP TO BRING OUT THE BEST IN THEM
APPLICATION:
WE CAN’T ASSUME THE WORK WILL BE DONE BECAUSE WE HAVE SENT OUT A WILLING WORKER WITH A GLOWING EXPECTATION OF RESULTS-ANYTHING, GOOD OR BAD, COULD HAPPEN
THEY MUST HAVE PERSONAL SUPERVISION & GUIDANCE UNTIL THEY ARE MATURE ENOUGH TO CARRY ON ALONE.
WE MUST ALWAYS REMEMBER THAT TOTAL WORLD IMPACT IS THE GOAL. PEOPLE OFTEN MAKE IT TO THIS POINT & THINK THAT WITNESSING & BEING A “GOOD CHRISTIAN” IS ALL THERE IS, & THE GOOD BECOMES THE ENEMY OF THE BEST.
“WHEN WILL WE LEARN THE LESSON OF CHRIST NOT TO BE SATISFIED MERELY WITH THE FIRST FRUITS OF THOSE WHO ARE SENT OUT TO WITNESS? DISCIPLES MUST BE BROUGHT TO MATURITY. THERE CAN BE NO SUBSTITUTE FOR TOTAL VICTORY, & OUR FIELD IS THE WORLD.” p. 95
