The Miracle of Multiplication:
Feeding of the 5,000 notes (Mk. 6:35-44)
Feeding of the 5,000 notes (Mk. 6:35-44)
Setting of the Miracle (v. 35-36)
· Quite late: much time had been spent anticipating feeding (Jesus coming in the fullness of time)
· Desolate: not a place likely to produce a feeding (Nazareth, Israel)
· Disciples’ 1st strategy—pass responsibility to those professionally employed in distribution (would prevent their service and His miracle)
Command of the Miracle (v. 37)
· Jesus made it clear that they were responsible (“YOU”)
· Disciples’ 2nd strategy—expend all they have, distribute enough for most to have a little (evangelism only)
Elements of the Miracle (v. 38)
· 5 loaves (bread = Word, 5 = Torah) and 2 fish (fish = disciples, sent 2 x 2)
People receiving the Miracle (v. 39-40)
· recline: gr. “sumposion,” “groups drinking (eating) together”
· The big group was divided into “people groups.” The greatest miracle will be seen by the one who goes to the back row (ends of the earth)
Person performing the Miracle (v. 41-42)
· HE has to do the work!
· HE keeps saying it so the disciples can do the same (bread distributed)
· HE sends the “fish” so the disciples can do the same (in the 2 fish was the potential to feed fish to them all)
· Performed for ALL
· Performed to satisfaction/fullness
Picture presented in the Miracle (compare with Mark 8:1-8)
· Completed Word—7 loaves (OT & NT)
· More disciples—“few” fish
· Less hopeless situation—4,000 fed
· Types of basket: 1st time gr. kophinos, traveling hand-basket Jews would use to go among Gentiles; 2nd time gr. spuris, man-sized hamper (Ac. 9:25). Great Commission (result of 1st feeding) v. rapture (result of 2nd feeding)
