Matt. 17 --The temple tax was for sin atonement, for everyone over 20 (Ex. 30:12-16). Represents the bondage of law—Peter assumed Jesus wasn’t free from it. (v. 24) --Addressed as Simon (fleshly name). Jesus’ reply: FREE from requirements of law because of sonship. Jesus was Son of the One whose Kingdom demanded a payment for sin—and so are we! Our sonship gives us freedom in Christ from sin & the law. --How to act in freedom (v. 27):· For someone else (“lest we should offend them”) · Go to the sea (often rep. the nations) · Throw in a hook, not a net (intentional, intends to catch just one) · Set the fish free by opening its mouth (believer set free to “say it”) · What comes from its mouth gives those under law what they need (silver coin; silver = redemption) --People set free: · Peter, through his involvement in the process · The fish (rep. men or disciples), by “saying it” · Those under law, by receiving “redemption” · Jesus is always free!! Whether one is unsaved, untrained, or uninvolved in setting others free, this process is the way we are to live out our freedom we have as sons—go to the world, choose one, set him free to say it to somebody else. (Gal. 5:1)
