Lesson 1: Matthew and Mark
Objective: to see the relationship of Christ to the Old Testament, and to recognize different facets of Christ presented by Matthew and Mark.
A. Matthew (c. 5-7) - Give one reason Jesus considers it important for His disciples to live according to the moral standards of the law & prophets. - List several of these moral teachings (5:21-48). - What is the only way that a person can escape the judgment of the law & approach these standards? - What promise does Jesus give that helps us overcome our desire for man’s praise as we do good deeds? (6:1-18) - What assurance does Jesus give to help us overcome anxiety regarding physical needs? (6:25-34) - Summarize Jesus’ other teaching sessions in Matthew (c. 10, 13, 18, 24-25).
B. Mark - What were some things Jesus did that caused the religious leaders to be so angry with Him? (2:1-3:5) - Jesus performs 4 miracles in Mark 4:35-41; 5:1-20; 5:21-23, 35-43; and 5:25-34. List the forces Jesus shows control over in each situation. - What is the one thing that hinders Jesus from exercising His power in people’s lives? (6:1-6)
Life Application - Which instruction from Jesus’ teachings in Matthew do you need to pay particular attention to? - How will you apply that instruction in your life? - To what degree does unbelief hinder Christ from exercising His power in your life? - What other attitudes in your life might be a hindrance to your Christian growth?
