Lesson 4: Law and Grace
Objective: to understand our inability to keep the law and our need for God’s grace.
A. The Law - Study and commit to memory the Ten Commandments (Ex. 20) - Jesus condensed these 10 into two. What are they? (Matt. 22:37-40) - What does James say about the seriousness of breaking even one of these laws? (Jas. 2:10)
B. What the Law Does - How are God’s people to respond to the things He has revealed about Himself? (Deut. 29:29, 30:11) - What is the summary of all the law? (Deut. 30:16, 20) - What do you think was Christ’s assessment of the law? (Matt. 5:17) - What does the law reveal? (Rom. 3:19-20) - What does the law bear witness to but fail to reveal fully? (Rom. 3:21) - How has a full revelation been made to us? (Rom. 3:22-24)
Life Application (Grace) - Compare Rom. 3:20 and Eph. 2:8-9, writing your conclusions. - How would you explain the difference between law & grace to someone depending on works? - What is Christ’s relationship with law? With grace? - What is your relationship with law? With grace? - How will understanding law & grace affect your motives & motivation?
