Mark 14, 15, 16
Luke 23
John 18, 19, 20
Perspective for the teacher:
Of all the facts of history, this is the greatest: Jesus Christ died for sinners, was buried, and rose again. Everything that we have taught in the past points to this event. We have the awesome experience of telling people that their own sins were indeed fully paid for by Jesus Christ on the Cross. There is no other message than this that can save sinners. Nothing can be added or taken away. This is the truth.
LESSON OUTLINE:
I. The Arrest and Punishment of Christ
a. Jesus in Gethsemane (Mark 14:32-36)
Even though Jesus was God, He was also man.
It was very difficult for him to face the terrible things that He know he had to suffer.
b. Jesus was betrayed and arrested (Mark 14:43-46)
Judas had been guided by Satan
Those who refuse to listen to God’s Word are also guided by Satan.
c. Jesus knew everything that would happen to Him (Mark 14:47-49)
He was God so He knew all things.
It was foretold in the Old Testament.
But He was willing to do it anyway.
d. Jesus was tried by the Jewish leaders (Mark 14:53)
A fair trial?
He was willing to go through this even though He was innocent.
The Jewish leaders wanted Jesus to be crucified even though He had done no wrong. Mark 15:12-14
e. Jesus was whipped and mocked (Mark 15:15-19)
He was suffering for you and me…for the things that WE have done.
He did it for me…for my sins.
He did it for you…for your sins.
II. The Crucifixion of Christ
a. He was nailed to the cross (Mark 15:24)
The cross was then placed in an upright position.
Jesus had told Nicodemus that “…And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life." John 3:14-16
b. He died for you and me (Mark 15:25)
The punishment for sin is death.
God killed animals and made clothes from the skins for Adam and Eve (Gen 3:7, 21)
God refused to accept the clothing that Adam and Eve put on themselves..An animal had to die.
Jesus had to die. There was no other way.
It is not only physical death but eternal separation from God - in Hell.
Jesus was sinless-perfect so was able to offer Himself to God.
The animal that took the place of Isaac had been caught by the horns instead of its legs. It had to be perfect.
c. God turned His back on Jesus (Mark 15:33-34)
There was darkness for three hours.
God turned away from Jesus and left Him completely alone.
Jesus felt separation from God, His Father, as the punishment for our sins.
d. Jesus died and gave His life for us (Mark 15:37)
Jesus suffered the complete punishment for our sins so that God could freely - without any cost to us - forgive and accept us as His children if we trust only in Jesus.
There was no other way. (Illustrated in the story of Cain and Abel Gen 4:1-5)
Cain tried to come to God in his own way, according to his own ideas. God had made it clear from the beginning that an animal must be killed and blood must be shed. God knew that one day His only Son would give His blood to pay for the sins of the world.
Abel brought the blood sacrifice that God required. The lamb that Abel killed and offered to God reminds us of the Lord Jesus.
God accepted Abel because he trusted in Him and brought the right offering.
God accepts anyone who puts their faith in the Lord Jesus and His blood that He shed for the sins of everyone in the world.
e. The veil in the temple was ripped (Mark 15:38)
The curtain had been placed in front of the inner room so that the people would never forget that because of sin they were shut out of God’s presence.
God ripped the curtain to show that He was fully satisfied with the payment that Jesus made to Him for sinners.
There was no longer a need for animal sacrifice to be made.
The way back to God was open because Jesus gave His blood as the complete payment for sins. John 3:16
III. The Burial of Jesus (Mark 15:42-46)
a. From man’s perspective, it was finished.
He was in the grave.
The huge stone blocked the entrance to the grave.
b. It looked like Satan had won.
He had gotten what he wanted.
The world now belonged to Satan
IV. The Resurrection
a. The women came to the tomb (Luke 24:1-4)
The stone was rolled away.
The body was gone.
Two angels stood by the tomb.
b. The message of the Angels (Luke 24:5-7)
Jesus had risen, just like He said He would.
All of His followers should have been waiting for Him and expecting Him to rise again the third day after His death.
Even before He left heaven, He knew that He would die the horrible death.
He also knew that He would rise again and never again have to die.
c. Jesus appeared to some of His followers.
To Mary Magdalene John 20:11-18
The apostles John 20:19-20
Several others
V. Why did Jesus have to die? The Old Testament tells us why.
a. Man was created perfect. He had a perfect relationship to God.
But sin caused that fellowship to be broken.
What could they do to renew the relationship? Nothing.
b. There was only one way to restore the relationship between God and man.
God saved Noah and all in the ark. Gen 6:5-8
God saw the sin of the world. He decided to destroy it.
But He saw Noah who, like Abel, knew he was a sinner and trust in God to send a Deliverer.
God put only ONE DOOR in the ark. There was only one way to enter the ark and be saved from the flood.
Everyone outside died in the flood because they refused to believe God and enter the ark by the one door. God forgives the sins of those who believe in Jesus and gives eternal life.
Jesus is the only way to eternal life.
He is the only One who can restore the relationship between God and man.
c. When God saw the blood, He passed over the Israelite homes (Exodus 12:3-7)
The Israelites would have lost their firstborn, but God made a way for them to escape.
But He had certain requirements:
- A lamb without blemish
- The lamb had to die.
- The lamb’s blood had to be places on the top and sides of the door frame.
None of the Israelites’ firstborn died.
Jesus was the perfect Lamb
He died as our substitute.
His blood covers our sins
If we trust and believe in Him we will live forever.
d. God covered the sins of Israel when the blood was placed on the mercy seat.
Lev 16:15 "Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering, which is for the people, bring its blood inside the veil, do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy seat and before the mercy seat."
But the blood of animals could never pay for the sin.
Those offerings only pointed forward to the Lord Jesus who was to come to provide the one complete sacrifice for sin by the giving of His own perfect life.
e. At the time of the death of Jesus, God tore the curtain that hung between the Holy Place and the Holy of Holies.
The curtain was to show that we were separated from God.
Jesus made ONE payment for sin. That was enough.
Now, we can come to God through Christ.
That’s why Jesus had to die.
Death is the penalty for sin.
Jesus paid that price for us.
We must put our faith and trust in Him to receive eternal life with Him.
John 14:5-6 Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You are going, and how can we know the way?" Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me."
Heb 10:10 …we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all. (NIV)
VI. Jesus Appeared to Two Disciples on the Road to Emmaus.
a. The two disciples didn’t recognize him. He asked what they were talking about (Luke 24:13-17)
b. They told him the usual gospel message (Luke 24:19-24)
The life of Jesus
His death
His resurrection (even they didn’t understand it at this point.)
That is the message that we usually give when sharing the gospel…beginning with the life of Christ. But the gospel story doesn’t begin there…..
c. Jesus began the gospel message in the Old Testament, telling prophesies about Himself that were being fulfilled. We should follow His example in sharing the gospel.
Start at the beginning and build a firm foundation.
Teach the Old Testament redemption story that is an example of Christ’s work on the cross.
Teach the life of Christ, His death, His resurrection.
VII. His Desire For Us Is to Have Fellowship With Him.
1 John 1:3 that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.
What is the purpose of all that we have been talking about?
- His desire for us was to have fellowship with Him.
- He gave His life so we could have fellowship with Him now.
- That fellowship with God will last forever.
