Chapter 9 outline
• God gives us many blessings through the gospel to reveal more of His glory & increase our love for Him, not to increase our love for gifts such as—
• Predestination (1 Pet. 1:20, Eph. 1:5-6) for His glory
• Incarnation (Rom. 15:8-9, Phil. 2:6-11) so all might glorify God the Father
• Reconciliation (Rom. 5:11) for our joy in God & relationship with Him (1 Pet. 3:18)
• Consummation (Christ’s return) for God’s glory (2 Th. 1:7-10)
• Eternal life (Jn. 3:36, 17:3), which is knowing God, beginning in this life
• “all good things” (Holy Spirit) to meet our true needs (Rom. 8:32, Phil. 4:19, Matt. 7:11/Lk. 11:13)
• Death & suffering (Phil. 1:21, 2 Cor. 1:8-9) to bring us closer fellowship with & dependency on Christ, giving us delight in sufferings (2 Cor. 12:7-10)
• The gospel’s best gift is God Himself, the gift all these things point us to (Jn. 6:35)
Chapter 10 outline
• We often misunderstand God’s gifts & point them toward us instead of Him
• Ex: prayer, a blessing of the gospel to be used for God’s glory (2 Cor. 1:20) that we misuse to indulge desires that don’t glorify God (Jas. 4:2-5)
• Ex: spiritual power (signs & miracles) also tempt us to value the gift above the giver (Jn. 6:26, Simon in Ac. 8)
• Our gratitude for the cross & for God’s blessings may be idolatrous if it is based in what we have gained rather than in how we may glorify God (1 Cor. 10:31)
• God shows us love & displays His glory in all creation (Ps. 19:1, 1 Tim. 4:4), especially in the gospel & its blessings
• Both enjoying God’s gifts & going without them (“feasting & fasting”) may glorify Him
• Scriptures showing God’s value above all His benefits: Hab. 3:17-18, Ps. 63:1-3, 73:24-26, Matt. 10:37-38, Phil. 3:7-8
Chapter 11 outline
• The gospel’s best news: God has removed every barrier between us & Him through Christ, so we can find everlasting joy in Him (Ps. 16:11, 27:4)
• We have been taught that God’s love is all about us, so people accept theology & involve themselves in religion without ever being truly changed
• Where does the foundation of your happiness lie, in you or in God? Real conversion turns one from seeking their own glory to seeking God’s
• God’s love connected to His glory—Jn. 11:1-6
• Love is doing whatever you need to do to help people know God’s glory in Christ forever
• Jesus’ love for His followers > them (us) seeing His glory (Jn. 17:24)
• We see God’s glory & become like Him, and as a result we reflect His glory to the world (2 Cor. 3:18)
• This is God’s goal in making us Christ-like (Rom. 8:29, Col. 1:18), not just about making us good people
• Beholding Christ leads to becoming like Christ, and vice versa, with God increasingly enjoyed by & displayed for all as a result
• This is the process by which God grows His kingdom & transforms the world through the gospel for His glory
