Intro & Chapter 1 notes
(Intro)
• God’s gift through the gospel: to forever know the glory of God revealed in Christ (Ps. 27:4, 2 Cor. 4:4-6, Phil. 3:8). We are to bring people to Christ & grow people in Christ for His glory (2 Cor. 3:18)
• We, however, have made it man-centered, focusing on what we can get out of it
• If you could have all the blessings of heaven without Christ, would you be happy? We tend to make salvation about heaven and heaven about personal benefits
• We must proclaim & exalt the gospel in such a way that people see God’s greatness (Ps. 70:4), not just a new set of ideas
• Gospel: good news of our full & final enjoyment of the glory of God in the face of Christ
(c. 1)
• A person who has truly received good news proclaims & explains it (p. 19 ex.)
• “gospel”: “euangelion,” good news (Lk. 2:10-11)—the Ruler has come, the enemy is defeated, & if we trust in Him we will escape death, know His greatness, & live forever (ex. freed war prisoners)
• “doctrine”: explaining aspects of this good news; doctrine is necessary for the proclaiming of God’s greatness to be understood, but it isn’t the main thing
Chapter 2 notes
• How does the Bible define the gospel? (noun form & verb form each used 77x in Bible)
• Good news that…
• God made all things (Ac. 14:15)
• God is Lord over all & has all authority (Rom. 10:15, Mk. 1:14)
• Jesus came, bringing God’s kingdom (Rom. 1:1-3, Lk. 2:10-11)
• Jesus died for our sins & rose again (1 Cor. 15:1-4, 2 Tim. 2:8)
• The Holy Spirit is promised to believers (Lk. 3:16-18)
• Salvation is made available (Eph. 1:13, Rom. 1:16), & its benefits:
--Healing & restoration (Matt. 4:23, Lk. 4:18), peace with God & others (Ac. 10:36, Eph. 6:15), eternal life (2 Tim. 1:10), grace (Ac. 20:24), & much more
• God is bringing this promise to all nations/peoples (Gal. 3:8, Eph. 3:6)
• All aspects of the gospel point to the glory of God in Jesus Christ
Chapter 3 notes
• The gospel & all aspects of it are great because they point to God & His glory above all else
• Ex: justification
• Jesus took our sin (1 Pet. 2:24), & we take His righteousness (2 Cor. 5:21)—“the great exchange,” the heart of the gospel
• Why is this great news? Because we can now love & glorify God (not because we avoid hell, get a clean conscience, etc)
• The goal of the gospel: knowing God & being changed into who Christ is so we show & experience His glory more & more (Isa. 40:9, Ex. 33:18, Ps. 63:1-2)
• God’s glory revealed in the OT by His words (Ps. 77:11-13), visions (Ez. 1:28), nature (Ps. 19:1), angels (Judg. 13:21-22), & His word (1 Sam. 3:21)
• God’s glory now revealed in Christ (Isa. 40:3-5, Jn. 1:14, 11:40), in His omnipotent divinity & His humble humanity
• Only those who believe can see this glory (Jn. 11:40, Jn. 3:3)—miracle of illumination
• The gospel removes our rebellion against God & His wrath against us so we can see His glory
Chapter 4 notes
• 2 Cor. 4:4-6
• satan’s plan: blind people to the gospel of God’s glory in Christ (v. 4)
• satan’s strategy: prevent preaching of or spiritual perception of the gospel
• Paul’s purpose: to turn people from satan’s plan to God’s (v. 5)
• God’s plan: illuminate people by His word to know His glory in Christ (v. 6)
• God’s strategy: illumination>the gospel>revelation of God’s glory>Christ
• The glory of Christ in the gospel = God’s glory, because
• God is the one speaking it (v. 6)
• Christ is God’s image/replica (v. 4), His glory in human form & personality (Col. 1:15, Heb. 1:3)
• Christ & the Father are one (Jn. 10:30, 1:14, 14:9); to know one is to know the other, & to know the Father one must know & trust the Son (Matt. 11:27, 1 Jn. 2:23, 4:15)
• God wants to use us to illuminate people to the gospel of the glory of God in Christ!
